Thurmaston Old School Community Centre premises and site were sold on Thursday 7th January 2021.
The Old School closed in March 2020 to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, and the Old School’s Trustee Board subsequently decided that the closure should be permanent, and that the premises and site should be sold.
Built in 1844 as Thurmaston’s school, and extended in 1901, the last pupils left in the late 1960s, after which the Old School became an education resource centre until the early 1980s. Since the early 1980s, the Old School had been used exclusively as a church and community centre.
The Old School’s Trustee Board received a good number of offers above the asking price of £350,000, and the Trustee Board will now meet during February 2021 to decide the future direction of the charity that owned and managed the Old School.
Chair of Trustees, and Vicar of Thurmaston, the Rev Tim Day, said “I am grateful to the many people who have served the people of Thurmaston through the Old School over many years, as volunteers, management committee members, and trustees; and to the many people who used the Old School for various activities and events. We are also grateful to Innes England, our agents, and Anthony Collins, our solicitors, for their professional services throughout the sale process”.
Rev Tim Day concluded “It is of course a matter for the new owner – a community group and charity – to make themselves known in due course”.
